The best monitor size and resolution for a Mac

Short answer

Pick a display near 220 PPI for Retina-sharp text (27″ 5K, 32″ 6K, 24″ 4K) or near110 PPI for clean 1× rendering (27″ 1440p, 34″ 3440 × 1440). Densities between about 140 and 175 PPI, such as a 27″ 4K, rely on scaling and look slightly softer.

Why macOS cares about pixel density

macOS draws every app at either 1× (one point is one pixel) or 2× (one point is a 2 × 2 block of pixels). Apple sizes its interface for about 110 points per inch on a desktop display. So a panel at about 110 PPI looks right at 1×, and a panel at about 220 PPI looks right at 2×. That is exactly why the 27″ Studio Display uses a 5K panel instead of 4K.

What “scaled” really means

Choose any other UI size in System Settings and macOS renders a 2× image at the “looks like” size, then resamples it to fit the panel. On a 27″ 4K set to look like 2560 × 1440, macOS draws 5120 × 2880 and shrinks it to 3840 × 2160. The result is usable and still sharper than 1440p, but fine text loses a little crispness and the GPU works harder.

See it yourself

The comparison tool includes a pixel loupe that simulates this resampling, so you can compare a 27″ 4K against a 27″ 5K at true pixel level. The methodology page lists the exact thresholds we use.

Frequently asked questions

What PPI is best for a Mac external monitor?

About 220 PPI for perfectly sharp 2× rendering (27″ 5K, 32″ 6K), or about 110 PPI for clean 1× rendering (27″ 1440p, 34″ 3440 × 1440). Densities in between rely on scaled modes that slightly soften text.

Why does text look blurry on my external monitor with a Mac?

Usually for two reasons. Since macOS Mojave (2018), macOS no longer uses subpixel antialiasing, so text on lower-density screens looks thinner and softer than on Windows. And on displays between about 140 and 176 PPI, macOS uses scaled modes that resample the image.

Is a 27 inch 4K monitor good for a Mac?

It works, and many people use one happily. At 163 PPI, the comfortable “looks like 2560 × 1440” mode makes macOS render 5120 × 2880 and scale it down to 3840 × 2160. Text is slightly softer than on a 27″ 5K and the GPU does more work, but it is far sharper than a 27″ 1440p.

Is 5K worth it over 4K for a Mac?

At 27″, yes if sharp text matters to you. A 27″ 5K (218 PPI) runs at a pixel-exact 2× with the same workspace as 1440p, while a 27″ 4K (163 PPI) needs a resampled mode for the same workspace. The difference is clearest in small text and fine lines.

What resolution should I use on a 4K monitor with a Mac?

On a 27″ 4K, “looks like 2560 × 1440” gives a comfortable interface size. On a 32″ 4K, “looks like 3008 × 1692” or “2560 × 1440” work well. “Looks like 1920 × 1080” is pixel-exact and sharpest, but the interface is large on these sizes.

Is 1440p good enough for a Mac?

At 27″, yes, for clean and comfortable 1× rendering at 109 PPI. Text is noticeably less smooth than on a MacBook’s Retina screen, so if you switch between them the difference stands out.

Is a 32 inch 4K good for a Mac?

Mostly yes. At about 140 PPI, the “looks like 3008 × 1692” or “2560 × 1440” modes are resampled, so text is slightly soft but most people find it fine. “Looks like 1920 × 1080” is perfectly sharp, but the interface becomes very large.

Why does macOS not support fractional scaling like Windows?

macOS draws apps at 1× or 2× only. To show other UI sizes, it renders a larger 2× image and resamples it to the panel, instead of laying out the interface at a fractional scale as Windows does at 125% or 150%.
